Marine Protective Measures

The Navy continues to coordinate with the National Marine Fisheries Service to develop mitigation measures to reduce effects on marine mammals during at-sea training activities.

The Navy implements protective measures to reduce or avoid potential effects on marine species.

  • Post qualified Lookouts to visually observe the area for marine species within mitigation zones prior to and during activities.
  • Establish mitigation zones for marine species; power down or shut down active sonar if marine mammals or sea turtles are observed within the mitigation zone.
  • Implement geographic mitigation measures.
  • Exercise caution while transiting to avoid risk of collision with marine mammals and sea turtles.
